USB Driver Problem

by wertnm . Updated 18 years, 2 months ago

I have an HP desktop model a1110n, running XP SP2. It has developed a problem with the USB ports as follows (note that the mouse I use is a wired Logitech USB port mouse, and it works fine. And my printer is plugged into a USB port, and it also works fine).- Looking at the device drivers in System, the USB listing has an error symbol the yellow question mark. When I try to plug something new into a USB port, like a USB hub, or a new wireless mouse, it drives the system nuts. I get the “Install new hardware Wizard”, and it asks for a cd or a specific location to install the new device from and, whether there is a cd or not, it fails to install the driver, and it can’t find a driver, even online. I get error messages at bootup asking me if I want to debug. Periodically the mouse ceases to function, and I regain it if I ctrl-alt-del, then exit the task manager. I am now cautious about using this shaky system.
