USB switch with HP C6180 mutifunction

When I try to hook more than one laptop to a Belkin switch I keep getting a error message that the USB device cannot be found. Has anyone had the same problem and if so how did you resolve the problem? It will work with on one Laptop attached. As soon as I try to add another Laptop I get the above error message.
