Usefullness of the Masters Degree?

I’ve been considering extending my education to earn a Master degree, but I keep hearing conflicting info as to the usefulness of a Masters.
Some people say they are always helpful, others say that unless it’s from an Ivy league university, it’s nogood.
What’s the truth?
