User Forgot Ubuntu password

Aside from renewing the install, is there some program (like ophcrack is to windows) to boot from to crack the linux password. The user needs to know password, and refuses to reinstall. It is the most recent version of ubuntu (well… 8.10), so if anyone could find a way to get us in it would be greatly appreciated. (inb4root root = locked)
