Video died

We can no longer get any graphics to show up on the monitor of our home pc went booting in normal mode. If we boot in safe mode or safe mode with networking then graphics come to the monitor. We have been using the onboard video to this point. Am I safe to assume that the problem is the onboard video will no longer work with its drivers and that purchasing a separate video card will allow us to once again begin booting in normal mode?
