Virtualizing device drivers?

I’m going to try and ask this as best I can. I have two devices that perform a similar function that I attach to my laptop. I never have need to connect them at the same time but I do have need to have them both attached at different times.

I will be the first to admit I’m not all that familiar with how virtualization works so please bear with me 😉

Is it possible to bundle device drivers in a virtualized layer? This way I could plug one device in, activated the layer and when I’m done deactivated the layer and have a different layer for the other device…
