Vista basic will not find updates

Acer laptop loaded with Vista Home basic ha never updated. It get the error message “Windows could not search for new updates” code # 80073712 I have deleted temp files, disabled the firewall, edited the registry per MS knowledge article. Google does not come up with that code number. Anyone run into this?
