VPN Alternatives

We have a small office with a peer to peer network. We have a couple of consultants who use applications on one of the machines through Go2MyPc. This software only allows one remote connection at a time and we are beginning to outgrow that. We looked into getting a VPN but we’re not sure we have the money or technical know-how for a VPN. Is there a middle solution? Something between simple remote access software and a VPN? Thanks for any opinions and help.
