vpn connection problems

Created a VPN connection in Windows XP. Connected to the VPN HOST. Problem seems to be that my internal private network ip range is the same as the internal ip range of the vpn host. Everytime I try to run a telnet app. to the vpn host, it’s trying to connect locally (not to the remote) Any help???
