Watching what user type

I work at a library in The Netherlands, and we have a UNIX program that takes care of a lot.
We have visitors who can search for books in a catalog, these search machines are terminals, A monitor, keyboard, and a 486 SX cpu.

My question:

“Is it possible to see which things are most searched for?”

just wondering if this can be done without altering or interfering with the original program
