Web Certification

I have been in the IT field for several years now. I am going into the direction of web mastering and designing. I thought that perhaps getting a certification would make me more marketable. There is the MCP+site building (Microsoft Certified Professional) which I heard was going to be discontinued end of this year. There is the Novell Certified Internet Designer and the CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster). My question is would having one of these certifications up my chance and salary whenlooking for a web related job? If so do any one of the three certs hold a higher value? I’ve heard many people in this field say you don’t need a certification and I would think it couldn’t hurt.
