What certifications should I go after?

I am new to the IT field and I am wondering what route I should take in order to receive certification. Right now I am in the process of obtaining my A+ cert but what should I go after next? I was thinking about MCSE but I have no networking experience and I was not sure if the MCSE track would teach me the “Essentials” like Network+ would. I want a stable background and I am not in a rush to achieve MCSE. I talked to an instructor and he had told me that I would be wasting my time going after Network+ if I planned on getting my MCSE. Is that true? My plan was this: A+, Network+, Security+. I thought that by staying vendor neutral I should be ok. Any suggestions please let me know.
