What is the best Open Source Operating System?

Hi,

I am looking at investigating open source operating systems as a preamble for replacing XP on my home network. Does anybody have a recommendation to what the best distribution to go for would be?

Please note that I have a limited knowledge of using Linux / Unix based OS systems.
