What role does community support play in open-source project sustainability

Community support plays a critical role in the sustainability of open-source projects. While code is essential, it’s the community that maintains momentum, fixes bugs, writes documentation, and supports new users. A strong, active community ensures that a project stays relevant, evolves with user needs, and gains trust in the broader ecosystem. Without contributors and users willing to engage, even technically sound projects may become stagnant or abandoned. Community-driven feedback also helps shape roadmaps, identify issues early, and promote transparency. In many cases, it’s the community—not the original developers—that keeps the project alive long-term through continuous collaboration and shared ownership.
