Which degree for me?

by emj . Updated 21 years, 11 months ago

Hi, gang, I’m back again, this time around I am seeking advice with regard to going back to school for my degree. I have put the computer support business on hold as I don’t feel confident enough to start it up as yet. I was very impressed by the response to my posting, and in the process, think others were helped by the advice and comments offered. I am hoping for a similar response to this query as well.

Here is my background thus far…I am a 39 year old woman who has worked for 10+ years doing desktop support, with an emphasis on technical support (more hardware/OS issues than application support). I have attended three colleges over the years without getting a degree from any one. Now, being unemployed and having loads of time on my hands, I’ve decided to take the plunge and go back to school. Ideally, I am hoping to get some sort of job and attend school at night.

The problem is choosing which degree to pursue. I find the Computer Science degree to be way too far outside the realm of my interest. The other option is a degree in Information Systems (Technology), which is more to my liking. I would eventually love to work in a hospital setting whether it be doing technical support or manipulating data, so I want to go the best route possible to fulfill my final goal. I had thought of going the route of Health Information Technology, but that actually sounds more impressive than what it is. There is only one school in the state I live in which offers this degree, and it’s only an AS. Doing research on what health technologists make didn’t impress either. If I am going to get a degree, I need to get it in a field that will offer the best opportunities. While I realize some areas of IT are struggling, I still feel it is where I want to continue my career. Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Thank you!
