Why no thesaurus?

We’re using Word ’97. Spellcheck works and a right mouse click on a word, then select ‘Define’ brings up the ‘Bookshelf Basics’ definition . . . but we don’t get any thesaurus suggestions when selecting this. We simply receive the thesaurus screenwith no suggestions . . . ever! WASSUP?
