Why Open Office sheets are of small size than MS Excel

I use Open office (don’t have ms excel at my desk) and use the xls format for saving spreadsheets. When i saved a 1.5 MB xls sheet in ods format it was only of 305 KB. Is there any way to reduce the file in xls format to this size, because when i will have to send it, it should be in xls format only.
