Why Project Management

As a career PM I have taken my job in my hands and asked the management what do we want from PM? in other words, what does a PM provide that a bunch of able techies won’t get to on their own. Where is the value added? This is with a view to developing an improved framework for delivering PM aginst an agreed business objective. How would Tom Mochal answer this question?
