Win NT 4.0 PDC to Win 2000 DC questions

by johnk39245 . Updated 21 years, 8 months ago

Hello all,
I’m currently managing a small network with one Domain on an old WinNT 4.0 PDC. I just purchased a new server and I want to install Win 2000 server on it as a Domain Controller so that it will take over the Win NT4 PDC. However, I still need the WinNT 4 server up running so that users can still use some application from this server. Now my questions are:
1. Do I need to demote the WinNT 4 PDC at all? if so, I should demote the PDC BEFORE or AFTER the installation of the new Win2000 server DC?
2. Lets call my current NT4 PDC A and I want to come up with a new domain name for my new Win2000 DC, lets call it B. Users will log in B domain, how can I setup so that users can use some application from domain A? (I do not want to confiture any trust and relationship between domain, I just want a quick and easy solution. I want only one domain on my network and I do not care about A domain)
3. Is there any other suggestions for quick and easy solution to resolve my scenario so that I can have users log in the Win2000 DC and still can use some application from the old WinNT 4 PDC?

Thank you for your inputs, any suggestion would be greatly appriciated.

John
