Win XP can’t join domain over WAN

I’m trying to join a Windows XP machine to a W2K domain over a frame WAN. The machine is setup with a static IP. When the client attempts to join the domain he recieves a message that the network path can not be found. I can ping him across the wan and he can ping the DNS server [ip and DNS name]. There is a helper IP in the router.
