Win2k How do I know NETBIOS is dead?

I’m planning a small win2k server and 20 win2kpro client rollout. When building the server, to my surprise it came up and asked for a NetBIOS name. I tried leaving this blank but it insisted on having one. I put one in and continued with the install. Later, I promototed to a DC, installed AD etc. To my surprise my NetBIOS name was still there in the login box ?
How do I know that NETBIOS is gone?
