Windows 2000 and Linux 6.2

I don’t know anything about Linux but I have the full operating system on disks ready for installation. I want to learn as much as possible about this system so that is why I got it. Question: How can I install it on my computer when I currently am using Win 2000? Are the two compatible? Would I be making a mistake if I tried to install it?
