Windows update fails to load…

Windows XP2 and IE 8, click on Windows Update and it starts to download, then fails with error 0x08024d007.

I have Googled and found several things to try including registering several dll’s.
To no avail. Machine was originally infected pretty severely, so I could still have some traces of bugs left. All other web sites work fine.
