windows XP is very slow to shutdown?

I have windows XP on my laptop and recently noticed that when I shut down the computer, and the screen turns all blue, it stays like that for several minutes before it actually shuts off. Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this? I noticed this after installing microsofts visual express but I have installed that program before and never had this problem.
