Windows XP performance

I have been using XP Home edition on a Centrion Duo 1,662Mhz Laptop for just on 12 months. The machine is now so slow it is painful. I have tried cleaning it up with one of the commercial utilities, but still have the problem. Aby idease on fixing this would be most welcome.
