Windows XP Repair Install after partial Recovery Console Repair

I attempted a Recovery console repair after receiving BSOD. Only got as far as creating tmp directory, copying config files to .bak, deleting config files, and copying files from cd to config. I was never able to log into windows as I continued to get the same BSOD.
I then did a repair install which allowed me to log into windows but now the user accounts are no longer there (the folder are). I assume this is due to the attempted recovery console repair. How can I recover my user accounts. Can I go back to the .bak files.
