Wireless connection for a laptop when travelling

I just purchased a laptop to take with us when we travel throughout Canada & the U.S. What kind of air card can I purchase that will give me the best access? We will be in a lot of rural areas, rarely urban. Is there a difference in the kind of card you have to use in the USA or Canada? I am totally new at this.
