XP Defragmenter Broken

Why does my defrag utility not work? It only worked the first time I used it. After that it never progresses past 1% (the Task Manager says it is running) even though I let it run for over an hour. My PC is a Dell P4 2.53Ghz with 512MB RAM and is @ 2 months old. I need to defrag to support video editing needs.
