XP indexing

I like the idea of indexing and when one is built I sure can find things fast. But lately the indexing service is taking too much resource and seems hung. For example, I just let it run over night and in the morning it was still consuming 30 to 60% of system resources and the indexing was all done, indicated by “0” in the docs to be indexed column. To make matters worse, every time the indexing service opens a file, the Norton antivirus software has to look at it too. Between the two of them the CPU usage sits just under 100%. I turned it off. Any ideas what’s wrong here?
