XPhome edition freezing after SP2 installation

I had to recover my XP home edition from recovery OEM CD, computer was bought in 2002. internet access was fine until I downloaded and installed SP2, as soon as you access internet it will freez in about 20-30 seconds, I have to shut down the machine and uninstall SP2 which made it work alright.
I have installed SP2 in safe mode as well but the problem keps recurring.
