AD Changes to mail recipients

Domain = windows 2000 AD in native mode
Exchange 2000

A user or contact changes their name (eg a marriage involves the female using the male surname)
When the name change is made in AD the GAL is updated as required but the record in AD still displays the original data.
Example: Tanya Jones gets married and changes to Tanya Smith.
Editing Tanya Jones’ data changes the display in the GAL but still lists her in AD as Tanya Jones.

This is fine for users of the GAL but unsatisfactory for the administrator (and this could be another person in latter years) because when further changes are required the administrator would look for Tanya Smith when in actual fact he/she is after the record of Tanya Jones.

Is there a way to update the records in AD to list the users/contacts according to their latest information?
