address book v contacts

I currently have a WAB which, when opened, shows nothing but little squares (in wordpad) and nothing at all in Outlook express 2000, although it is 173Kb in size. I also have a contacts folder in outlook express 2000 with hundreds of contacts. How can I import contacts into my wab, or use contacts as an address book?
