Adobe Reader 4 and 5

Using Adobe Reader 4 when i open a pdf file from an internet or intranet site the file opens but is always blank and in the bottom left of the screen it says done. I can open the pdf files which came with the software and read them but no others. Ami missing a plugin of some kind? I get the same problem with version 5.
