Archiving Messages – Outlook 2002

In a W2K environment and Exchange Svr 2000, a user using Outlook 2002 SP 2 can not archive any messages. It stops without any error messages or completed results. This user has an excessive amount of E-mail message (about 9,000). Any suggestions on reducing the stack?
