Bkupexec V8, Engine will not start

We have installed an NT 4.0 server, with service pack 6a, running SQL 7. We have also installed Mdac 2.5. We have uninstalled and attempted re-installing the Backupexec product, but the job engine refuses to start. We have tried the latest build 3316.
Any suggestions short of attempting to re-install the server.
NT Backup is working.
