Booting from a external HD

Hello all
I am looking to boot several machines from a external HD be it USB or Parallel. Firstly is this possible.
Basically what I am looking to do is install multiple OS’s on various partitions to enable me to boot from this on several different machines.

I hope this makes sense can anyone help or suggest a alternative??
