Cannot delete in Word 2000

A customer has saved some text in ‘Document 1’ which now appears by default everytime Word 2000 is opened. You can delete this text and save the document but the text reappears each time a new document is opened. Even when Word is uninstalled/reinstalled, the text is still there. Has he saved this as a template perhaps? If so – how do I return to the status quo?
