Can’t get to link in outlook express

When reading an Outlook Express 6 email message, clicking on a link does nothing. This began recently. Doing the same in an Outlook message works. I’ve tried changing IE settings, but found no solution. MS support page is no help.
I’m running Win XP Pro SP2. The only software I’ve recently installed is the ICQ 5 upgrade.
