Can’t open files in word

I restored the hard drive on my Dell 8400, running XP SP2. Have reinstalled Office XP. and copied my documents from a backup disk. I get the following message when I try to open a file: “The Document or path is not valid. Try these suggestions. *Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document.”

I don’t know what to do to be able to open my Word files. Can anyone help please?
