cd players

I am running Win XP Pro and have a CD burner (HP)brand and a generic CD player. Sometimes I can play or install a program with no problem, then the next CD I try to install, I get an error stating the program is not responding. I can take that CD and go to my laptop and install it immediately, no problem. They are both running WinXP. Any ideas or suggestions will be much appreciated.
