Cells remaining highlighted

Every once in awhile in Excel 2000 after selecting a cell it remains highlighted when moving to another cell. In fact all cells start adding to the group of highlighted cells. They all turn to the same background shading also. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this would be greatly appreciated.
