choosing one email ends up choosing all

NT 40, sp6a environment. Using OL98, 2k and xp. Some users select one piece of email and it ends up highlighting all the email on the list. It’s almost like the shift key is stuck (but it’s not). This problem comes and goes. Not limited to version of Outlook. Have checked outlook settings and all looks good. Have also checked devices, drivers, etc. Any ideas?
