Convert text in a call to a number

I have an excel spreadsheet that has a column which can have one of three text words entered ?Windows, UNIX or Hardware?.

I want to find a way to convert those three words into numbers so I can automatically generate a total amount in a separate column.

Example: If I have the word ?Windows? entered 3 times in this column, I want it to calculate this so changing my Windows Total column to 3.

My Excel formula skills are rather limited, so if more info is required let me know.
