Converting vinyl and music tapes to mp3

I’m trying to convert my record and tape collection to mp3 and am using Easy CD Creator (Roxio) 5 and a pc with WinXP, turntable, amp and double tape deck. I have wired up the hi fi to the pc as per the instructions that came with the software but when I try to record tape or vinyl the resulting mp3 file is just static. I have tried different configurations but always get the same result. I am not sure of the make of the sound card but changing this is the last of my options I think. Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks
