Deletion of Mailboxes

What is the best practice for deleting mailboxes in an Exchange 2003 environment? Currently, we delete the mailbox from active directory; we then let that users department handle the deletion of the rest of the account. Are there advantages\disadvantages to just deleting the account, and letting that process delete the mailbox?
