direct show

i tried to play a dual sided dvd/cd a message appeard saying i need direct show in order to play the dvd,is there a software patch for this my system is modern i thought mayb this would not be an issue although my dvd player seem to want a fee for downloading what i think maybe the firmware for it to run,.
