DirectX not Responding

I just downloaded the DirectX 8.1 and tried to install it for 5x but it is not responding when it comes to automatic checking for updates on my computer. Tried to looked at the microsoft troubleshooter site but it did not help me. Could help me with this? My OS is Windows Me.
