Excel 2000 closes

I am currently running office 2000 pro on windows xp pro machine. Excel tries to open but never makes it there and returns an error” Microsoft Excel for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close.” I can open excel by typing “/safe” after the excel.exe. I am not sure where to go from here.
