Excel loads infinite worksheets

Excel has decided to open with an infinite number of worksheets- until available memory filled. I am running office 2k in win98 2e on a P3 machine. I have tried repair and a complete uninstall/reinstall. How can I get excel to open normally? How canI manually set the number of worksheets to open at startup without being in excel? Any help will be deeply appreciated. Thanks.
