Excel Won’t Start

Win98 system with Excel 2002: Suddenly, I cannot start excel. It will hang my PC with error message that system is low on resources – there is no other recourse but a reboot. All other office programs start just fine. Virtual memory is fine, disk space is fine. 512 MB of ram. Note: I had just installed the latest patches to office xp from the microsoft website. Any ideas?
